What to consider when buying Kids Bedroom Sets

The two most important features to look for in choosing kids’ furniture are its design and durability.  Children’s furniture should be functional and can be used to separate their bedroom into zones such as an area for sleeping, studying, playing, and storage.

An essential factor to consider when choosing furniture for your children’s bedroom will largely depend on their age.  Your children’s age will greatly help you determine the style, size, material, and quantity of furniture that you need.

The color of the furniture in your kid’s bedroom is as important as its design and size.  Featuring a colorful headboard can help add depth and dimension to the room.  It is fun to have the color of the furniture to be in contrast with the color of the wall since it will play a huge role in spicing up the decoration of your kid’s room.

Always keep in mind to pay close attention to the materials that the kid’s furniture is made of; it is better to choose natural wood, MDF, or plywood. The best material for a baby’s crib is natural wood, particularly beech or oak because a crib made from natural wood allows the baby to breathe comfortably.

For cabinets, we suggest that they must have at least 15 mm thickness. It is also important to know what kind of hardware the manufacturer is using for durability safety reasons; ideally, we recommend that the hinges and mechanisms of the drawers should be with soft-close runners such as those manufactured by Hettich, GRASS, Hafele, Blum.

Nursery and Toddler’s room Furniture

Furniture in the nursery room has very particular requirements since babies and toddlers are the ones using the room.  We recommend choosing low furniture in proportion with the height of your toddlers, this way when they start walking, they can easily hold on to the furniture for support; this includes furniture such as a small table and matching chairs.

It is also essential and highly advised that you buy furniture with soft surfaces, child-friendly materials, and rounded corners to avoid any serious accidents.  Kids' furniture should always provide the necessary comfortable and safe conditions for children; it is an important factor in the development of children.

Another beautiful addition to any nursery is using wooden trunks for keeping toys.  Placing several boxes in one corner of the nursery where you can store everything neatly away when they’re finished playing. You could even add decorations or paint them with vibrant colors or pastel shades, which will add an inspiring and interesting element to the rest of the scheme.

Incorporate furniture pieces with vibrant colors, mix colors, or look for a few pieces in a complementary color of accessories such as storage shelves, throw pillows, accent sofa, or chairs that would be perfect to add fun in a young child’s room.

Try mixing fun pieces with more practical and multi-functional furniture such as a traditional bed that can vary in dimensions from 70х150 cm to 80х170 cm which your child can still sleep in even after they grow up or a multi-purpose transforming bed from a crib for a baby, you can transform it into a bed for a child of school age, and save yourself from the need to buy a new bed for another 5 to7 years.  Combine these types of furniture with a fun and colorful child-size desk and chair or add a petite and bright-colored accent chair.  Opt for beds that incorporate drawers, shelves, or built-in storage compartments; or a night table that doubles as a study desk.

Pre-school Kids and School-going Furniture

Consider creating layers of fun furniture for your nursery by incorporating a play bunk in your children’s play space if the ceiling height allows it.  Having a low floor bed with a low ladder design leading up to a top bunk will allow the room to have more vertical space for an additional hangout place to use as a reading nook or an area where they can let their imagination run wild.

Since pre-school kids are usually active, make sure that the furniture you would place in their bedroom is stable enough and ensures safety features.  At this age, your children start to develop hobbies and are beginning to express themselves more; this is the time to incorporate a theme for your child’s bedroom which includes his or her favorite colors or a favorite cartoon or book character.

As your children progress from pre-school to the time they start going to school, a transition begins that would require you to change some furniture such as replacing the play table with a sturdier desk that can be used for studying.  There will also be the need for more storage cabinets and shelves for keeping books, notebooks, and other miscellaneous items needed in school.

Points to Remember:

  • Consider the height of shelves you place in your kid’s bedroom – for children ages 5 to 6 years old, we advise that placing shelves at the height of 130cm from the floor line is perfect for them to easily reach items on the shelf.  At 7 years old, you can adjust the height of the shelves up to 150cm; placing the shelves higher than this measurement will be difficult for your children to reach and get things off the shelves.

  • Shelves, cupboards, and closets are a must, such as a corner closet or cupboard, and a chest of drawers or pedestal.  It is better if this furniture has built-in storage for toys and other children’s essentials.

  • Take note of the ideal height for a study table or desktop, it is very important for your kid to maintain correct posture and good eyesight.  For toddlers (under 6 years old) table height should be 40 to 45 cm while for children ages 6 to 7 years old, the table height should be 52 cm.  For children 7 to 8 years old the ideal desktop height is 58 cm while those ages 9 to 11 years old need a 70 cm height for a desk or table.
